Narratives of popular educators: contributions of social movements to education

Abstract

This study addresses the contribution of social movements to education, with an emphasis on the narratives of popular educators, and is linked to the project Research, training, and intervention in education: studies in educational contexts, both school-based and non-school-based, supported by a Uniube scholarship. The objective is to describe the contributions of social movements to education and to identify educational theories within and for social movements. The research adopts a qualitative approach in education and draws on knowledge-sharing methodologies, such as orality and lived experiences. In this regard, data production involved conducting an interview with a popular educator. The material collected was collaboratively constructed and subjected to interpretive analysis, grounded in theoretical references from scientific articles published over the past ten years on the topic. The findings indicate that popular education constitutes an important tool for social empowerment, as it seeks to challenge power structures and promote social transformation and social justice.
