Contributions of Santa Catarina's community higher education institutions to human development

Higher education institutions play important roles in society, such as generating and transferring knowledge and technology, promoting professional training and qualification, establishing social relations with the community in which they operate, among other areas of activity. This research aims to verify the contributions, over a period of fifteen years, of community higher education institutions (ICES) to human development in the municipalities of Santa Catarina. To achieve the proposed objective, quantitative research was conducted using the panel data analysis method, with a time frame between 1995 and 2010. The main results highlight that ICES in Santa Catarina contribute to human and regional development in terms of the number of enrollments and the number of places for all indicators (Income, Education, Longevity, and General IDHM) and the number of teachers for the income indicator in the municipalities of Santa Catarina. Thus, the research concluded that higher education can contribute with varying degrees of intensity, in different contexts, to both human development and regional development.
