Convergences between Ilya Prigogine and Manuel Sérgio in the fields of sciences

Abstract

This study addresses a convergence between aspects of the theories of Ilya Prigogine and Manuel Sérgio – a convergence that fills a gap in the academic literature regarding the relationship between these two authors. Accordingly, the aim was to understand the points of convergence between Prigogine’s physical theory and Sérgio’s program for the science of human motricity. The study, which employs a theoretical and bibliographical methodology, is justified by the absence of articles or essays specifically addressing this theme. As results, three points of convergence were identified between the examined theories: one regarding their stance toward Cartesianism; another concerning the reconciliation between the natural and human sciences; and finally, one related to the understanding of the concepts of freedom, creativity, and responsibility. The identification of these convergences sheds light on essential dimensions of Manuel Sérgio’s epistemological project, as they express the worldview and philosophy of science upon which the author partially bases his theory.
