Abstract
Environmental governance can be conceptualized as a broad set of goals and approaches for making and implementing decisions related to the environment and sustainability. The use of indices and indicators related to environmental governance or sustainability has proven to be a promising tool because it allows the aggregation of numerous data and reflects a country's conditions. Considering that the implementation of the Bioceanic Route will require the cooperation between its countries—Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Paraguay—to ensure environmental sustainability and mitigate environmental impacts, it worths an overview of the countries along the Bioceanic Route regarding environmental issues using established international indicators. To reach this, the values and scores obtained by the countries of the Route in the Environmental Performance Index (EPI) published in 2024 and Environmental Governance Indicators for Latin America and the Caribbean (IGA) published in 2020 were analyzed. It was possible to verify that, although the Route countries are relatively close to the regional averages in each indicator analyzed, there are still challenges to overcome regarding environmental governance, both within each country and when considering the necessary cooperation between the countries so that the Bioceanic Route can be sustainable, from an environmental point of view.
